About 4 years ago, I worked with a HAM and he had all sorts of neat gadgets to play with.  Now I'd always been interested in CB radio, in fact a few of my high school buddies and I had CBs in our trucks and used to chat on our way to school. Well when he showed me this little thing you could hold in your hand and talk to people just like on the CB only better quality, I was hooked.  And he had one in his car that he could talk to Europe on – even cooler.  He offered to help me get my license and he'd let me borrow a HT till I got one of my own.  So I went to Radio Shack, got the book, studied and then went and took the test.  I've been KD5IJK ever since.  I'm still a technician, I've got the general book and have read it, but just never gone and taken the test.  But what I like to play with is APRS and tri band HT's, so I don't REALLY need the general, but I aim to get it one of these days.  Big Bend National Park plays a big part in the whole general license thing.

Like I said I like to play with APRS to do that I've got a Kenwood D7.  It works really well.  However the part of the town I live in has too much interference.  So I can't broadcast from my apartment but I can still listen.  My commute is not very long so I don't put it in my truck very often but when I do you can click on the links below to track it.  I've also got Street Atlas with APRS+SA on my computer at home that I'll turn on when I go on trips so I can track myself. One of these days we're hoping to find a house and when that happens, these will stay up more often.

I have another HT: a Yaesu VX5-R, which if you want a nice little HT to take camping is the way to go. I'm also hoping to get a mobile to put in my truck.  I just haven’t decided which one to get...too many choices.

For my tracker I use a Garmin GPS 40, but it's starting to get old.  I'm thinking of replacing it and if anyone has suggestions on a relatively inexpensive GPS, I'd like to hear them!

My next project is to build a soundcard TNC.  I've had the plans and the stuff to make it for quite a while but just not the time...

Mike
