Welcome to Logan's Page!
He is my little Sheltie bundle of joy. My first taste of sheltie kind, was through my Aunt Melita. We were lucky to fly out to South Carolina for my family reunion and visit when Little Man - short for Little Dutchman - was about 4 months old. He is a tri-factored sable and his antics and intelligence made me fall head over heels in love with this breed. He just recently had to be put down at the tender age of nine and my Aunt is heartbroken.
However, even though Little Man was great, I knew better than to not research the breed before I made a lifetime commitment. So I delved deep into the Shetland Sheepdog's history, breed standards, color, genetic defects, and of course, personality. The only thing I was wary about was the Sheltie's tendencies to bark - and sometimes to bark a lot. And since we use to live in an apartment, it was a huge concern. But Logan is a VERY good boy and only barks when he's really excited or when we play with the soccer ball or chase my son around the house. I could not have asked for a better man to share my life with....except maybe my husband and son! He is so laid back that friends of ours have nicknamed him "The Hippy Dog!"
I started looking for a puppy (I was looking mainly for a sable, but a bi-black, bi-blue or sable merle would have worked too) and almost had one from Lockehill Shelties, but at the end of the day after everyone's picks, the only puppy left was a little tricolor boy. So I kept looking. I happened across Cathi Gorman and Springmist Shelties. She had had every bitch she bred that season take...an unusual occurrence in itself and ended up with 20 puppies in four litters! I made a deposit on one of two sable boys from a litter of four when they were three days old and waited. I first saw and fell in love with Logan when he was five weeks old. He was so tiny, and yet he was the biggest one of the litter and also the most playful and rambunctious. I should have known then to put the "mischief" in his name. We waited for him to grow and three and a half weeks later, I picked up my little man. Logan is a tri-factored sable, non white-factored. His registered name with the AKC is Springmist Caramel Mischief - Caramel for his coloring and mischief for his personality. His call name Logan is after my favorite X-men character: Wolverine (aka Logan) One of my favorite photos is of his ride home with me that first day.

Isn't he just adorable?! He was born on October 18th, 2002. His seventh birthday is just a few months away. My how time flies! As far as events since I got him, well, he had to have one of his baby canines pulled and boy was it a BIG tooth. The only problem I ever had with him was his ears. They were braced by Cathi when I got him and they were left in for 4-6 weeks before the glue started losing its grip. Well, over the next five to six months they were re-taped again and again and finally I gave up (and he was very happy that I did). He has hound ears, but since he isn't a conformation man, I quit worrying. He's also a big 17 1/4" tall. A VERY big sheltie as far as the standard is concerned. He has been neutered and is just enjoying the good life.
In addition to everything else, I originally worked him in obedience. He has been to and passed his Puppy Headstart, Basic Obedience and Advanced Basic Obedience classes. He has already earned his Canine Good Citizen. He is eager to learn and please...although that independent streak of his can make for some interesting learning sessions. His food and ball drive are unbelievable. And just so you know....he would give up food and water for a soccer ball to be thrown!
I'm thinking about getting into agility with him. He is FAST and my little acrobat dog. I think he may like the running and playing and jumping more than the obedience at this point. Here's a current photo of him at almost 7 years old:
I've included links below to some of my favorite breeders websites, information websites and then some of my favorite obedience links. I've included the AKC and the direct link to the information on the Canine Good Citizen test, simply because it is a great program that I think all dog owners should attempt it. I've also included a couple of links for rescued shelties...those souls who will reward you with greater love than you could imagine.
As well, I included some links about dog food. I am a big supporter of feeding and taking care of our animals the way we do ourselves. They have only us to depend on. Why should they not have pain medication after surgery? Why should they eat dry dog food made from things I cannot even mention here without making my stomach flip? Please research what you put into and onto your animal and choose carefully. It will make a difference in the longevity, health and quality of life of your best friend.
Eventually I will get a link on here for a few more pics of my little man as he has grown.
Now on to the barrage of information! :-D
